We want to make families aware that the school district has received notification that individuals in the Salem, Gervais, and Woodburn communities may be planning another student walkout demonstration this Friday at 12:40 PM. We encourage families to have conversations at home with their students beforehand to discuss your expectations regarding school attendance and participation.

Regular school attendance is essential to academic success. When students miss class, for any reason, learning is disrupted and they can easily fall further behind. Any student who walks out of school without pre-approval from the office, will be marked absent and not allowed to re-enter the building for the remainder of the school day. Skipping class will result in a disciplinary consequence.

Before the student-led walkout and demonstration last week, the school stayed neutral and did not encourage nor stop students from participating. We asked students who chose to participate to be respectful and to represent our school with dignity while off campus. Concerning reports were received afterwards of student behavior that was both unsafe and illegal, putting themselves in harm's way. We asked both Gervais PD and Oregon State Police to be present during the demonstration, but neither had the resources available to stay.

We are very concerned about student safety and want families to realize that when their students leave campus without permission, it can be dangerous because staff are unable to supervise them off campus.

On Wednesday, February 25th, from 5:30-7:30 PM, we’ll have an important parent education event: How to Protect Your Child from Fentanyl. Fentanyl has hit our communities harder than any other drug in history. Fentanyl is involved in 90% of young Oregonian drug deaths, making drugs now the leading cause of death for this age group (15-24). Sadly, many of these deaths could have been avoided if the youth had been educated on the risks of fentanyl.

Schools are adding fentanyl education into their health education curriculum, but a few days of drug education a year is not enough to protect our kids from this dangerous drug. Parents and caregivers need to be involved, educating their kids about this danger and reinforcing the messaging at home. Most parents today were raised during the time of DARE, where “just say no” was the extent of drug education, and they don’t have an example of an effective drug talk to look back on. This event will educate everyone on how the current drug landscape is more dangerous than ever due to fentanyl and give tips and tools to help parents and caregivers have conversations with their kids.

The event will start with the screening of a short film, The New Drug Talk and La Estrella, following a discussion with local experts. Special guests include Marion County Substance Abuse Prevention Coordinator and the Youth Prevention Education Coordinator. We will also have folks from Interface Network to assist individuals with enrolling and navigating the Oregon Health Plan.

While this presentation is geared toward families with children in middle school or older, all are welcome to attend. This is an event you won’t want to miss. We hope to see you there!

Hi parents,

Did you know that deaths involving fentanyl grew faster for Oregon teens than for any other age group? Fentanyl is involved in 90% of young Oregonian drug deaths, causing drugs to now be the leading cause of death for this age group (15-24).

Some teens reach for pills to self-medicate or have fun. Some teens may take a pill given to them by a friend they trust. Parents and caregivers can help kids stay safe by talking with them about the dangers of fentanyl, fake pills, and today’s drug environment. That’s why Song for Charlie and Trillium Community Health Plan have teamed up to launch “The New Drug Talk: Connect to Protect Oregon” program. This free online resource gives you the tools you need to have conversations with the kids in your life. Explore the site today to find videos, articles, discussion scenarios, local resources, and more. www.thenewdrugtalk.org/oregon

We will also be having a parent night on Wednesday, February 25th, from 5:30-7:30pm at the high school, where we will screen the film “The New Drug Talk” and have professionals from Marion County lead the parent discussion. There will be Spanish and English screenings.

If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to reach out! guadalupe_lopez@gervais.k12.or.us or 503-792-3803 x4036

We had a fun unified basketball game against staff and families. Here is a quick shoutout from our unified basketball coach Andrew Brown: "A true Heart-felt thank you from the Unified Basketball Team and their families for playing and supporting our Staff & parents vs. Unified Ballers on Tuesday evening. We had so much fun, and despite achy backs and sore joints on us older folks, we’d like to look to continue this and maybe make it an annual tradition possibly. Again, thank you so much. It’s the staff, students, our families, and this community that truly makes us GERVAIS STRONG!!! GO COUGARS!!!"

There is an open house at the Willamette Career Academy (WCA) in Salem this evening from 6:00-8:00 PM. This is a great opportunity for students and families to experience the exciting career-related programs they offer there: construction trades, cosmetology, dental assisting, diesel technology, health services, and manufacturing. We will also have WCA principal Alan Kirby meeting with our sophomores today in an assembly during advisory to share more about their programs there. Gervais students can participate in the WCA at no-cost to them as juniors and seniors. It is an amazing program.

There are concerns about the growing number of students vaping in schools across our region. We are working hard at GHS to be very proactive in responding to this issue and maintaining a drug-free zone at school, but we need families’ help. Please talk with your students about the harms of vaping and encourage them to get help if this is something they are experiencing. Our GHS student advocate Guadalupe Lopez works with students struggling with substance use and is a great resource for our community. She has prepared the following information for families to help guide a conversation with your students. We will continue to share information to help educate and empower families. This week's topic is vaping e-cigarettes.

The American Lung Association (https://www.lung.org/quit-smoking/e-cigarettes-vaping/impact-of-e-cigarettes-on-lung) provides comprehensive information on the effects and facts of e-cigarettes and tabacco use. E-cigarettes are the most commonly used tobacco products among kids—and it's become a significant health concern. They include e-pens, e-pipes, e-hookahs, and e-cigars, known collectively as ENDS—electronic nicotine delivery systems. They're also sometimes called "vapes" or "vape pens." The Lung Association remains extremely worried about the rapid increase in youth using these products. Watch this short 8-minute video to learn how vaping is harming our kids: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z0QKbUpkKsg
__________
