Dear Families,
As we go into this holiday break I hope that your students are feeling supported in their school setting and feel confident that there are adults in their school communities who care deeply about each of them. I know that at times school is challenging not only academically but socially and emotionally for parents and students. At any point in time, if you have questions or concerns with regard to your student, please do not hesitate to contact your student’s teacher, counselor or building administrator.
Some of you may have heard about the suicide of the 4th grade student in Oregon City last week. This tragedy is just the most recent example that many of our students are growing up in a world some of us have a hard time understanding and even young children are experiencing struggles that at times may seem too difficult to endure. The key is open communication between students, parents and staff if someone is experiencing a crisis. The Gervais School District and the State of Oregon has many resources available to help families and students. On each school’s webpage and on the district website, there is a link on the right hand side of the page titled “Crisis/Suicide/Threat Help?” that will direct you to phone numbers where you or a student can seek out assistance in a time of crisis or need. This link and these phone numbers should also be used if you become aware that another person may pose a threat to him or herself or others. I have included the link in this message as well:
