In the Spring of 2019, the Oregon Legislature passed the Student Success Act. This act  provided additional monies for K-12 education to meet the needs of students’ mental health and behavioral needs and increase academic achievement for all students.  These monies will be distributed to districts in the form of grants.  There are four areas the state considers “allowable” to spend these grant dollars:  reducing class size, increasing instructional time, promoting the health and safety of students, and developing a well-rounded education for all k-12 students. While these do seem rather broad, each district is required to ask all stakeholders (parents, staff, community members and students) for feedback on their priorities within each of these areas.

The Gervais School District will spend time in December and January gathering this information and preparing our proposal to the state and have it ready for community review in February.  Our deadline to apply for the grants is March 2020 with the money available July 1, 2020.  While the district has not received an exact dollar amount yet, the Oregon Department of Education has informed us the Gervais School District could receive more than $600,000 for the coming school year.  This is a significant amount of money and with it comes a level of accountability this district has not experienced before. As your superintendent, I recognize this is a heavy responsibility and I am holding myself personally responsible for our results as a district.  I will be spending the next six months working with stakeholders to design plans and implement strategies focused on improving outcomes for all of our students.  Your participation is going to be extremely important.  In the coming weeks I will be sending you an email link for our first survey. In the meantime, please take a look at the flyer and visit the link below for more detailed information about the Student Success Act.

And please, do not hesitate to contact me with any questions.

Sincerely,

Dandy Stevens
Superintendent

Sinceramente,

Dandy Stevens
Administradora
