Teacher and Students

At Gervais High School, students aren’t just learning about construction—they’re building their futures, one project at a time.

Thanks to a partnership with Team Oregon Build and support from Lane Workforce Partnership, GHS students are working hands-on to construct two 8x8 storage sheds. One will support our partnership transition program with North Marion School District, while the other will serve our GHS soccer program in the 2025–26 school year.

The project was led by Lindsay McCargar, Project Assistant with Lane Workforce Partnership, who brought his passion and experience back to Gervais after attending a statewide educator professional development workshop at Lane Community College.

“Through that experience, I gained an understanding of how important our efforts were to those less fortunate,” Lindsay shared. “I wanted to provide the same experience for our students here at GHS.”

The materials for the project were made possible by Team Oregon Build’s partnership with Lowe’s and other statewide education and workforce organizations. Beyond construction skills, students are learning about collaboration, project planning, and the impact of giving back.

“It’s real-world experience. They’re learning trades, gaining confidence, and contributing to their school and community.”

Programs like Team Oregon Build are part of a larger, statewide effort funded by the Oregon Department of Education to support Career Connected Learning, a hands-on model that prepares students for high-demand jobs in construction and beyond.

As demand for career-based education grows, so does the need for ongoing support and investment. Stories like this remind us just how powerful these programs can be for students, schools, and entire communities.
