Dear Parents,
As the school year is coming to a close, I wanted to take the opportunity to give you an update on this school year and what the district is planning for the 2021-22 school year at this time.
First, when students began returning to classrooms in March, the district had hoped to bring students back more than just two days per week as the spring progressed. When the Oregon Department of Education (ODE) and the Oregon Health Authority (OHA) reduced social distancing from 6 feet to 3 feet, we were poised to bring everyone back. However, the continued requirement of 6 feet of distancing when eating proved to be a difficult problem to overcome. With the facilities we have available to us, there was no way of moving between 3 feet and 6 feet throughout the day. That said, for the Fall of 2021, the district will be providing school five days per week, full days for all students. If we have to rent “event tents” to accommodate meal times, we will! However, I’m hopeful that ODE will allow more local control for districts to decide how to keep students safe and healthy. Guidance from ODE for the fall will not be made available to districts until July 19th. That gives the district about four weeks to make any final adjustments before students show up which is not a lot of time.
The return to school in March also saw students in grades 6-12 wearing the contact tracing badges. Over the last several weeks, the district has had many students who tested positive for COVID-19. By using the badges, the district was able to respond to each reported case and send only those students home who absolutely needed to go to quarantine. Last week was our highest episode yet where two students who tested positive required the district to send home 18 additional students. Without the reliable and timely data obtained from the devices, the district more than likely would have sent home entire cohorts for 14 days. I believe as we move into the fall, continued wearing of the devices and the availability of rapid testing will allow the district to fully open and remain open while at times needing to send only small pockets of students home due to exposures.
Last week the district’s technology department sent out information about returning Chromebooks and hot spots. It is important to return these items as some of them are leases which are expiring and the district needs to return those. In the fall, the district will distribute new Chromebooks to every student. The district intends to continue using the devices for students to complete homework and access supplemental educational materials throughout the 2021-22 school year. Because we don’t know what next year might bring, the district decided to be prepared in case some other type of shut down is ordered. At the same time, by having the devices in students’ hands with internet connections, this goes a long way to eliminating the need to make up missed days associated with inclement weather. As school begins in the fall, you and your student will receive guidance on this topic.
The district is working with the Salem Health Clinic to bring a mobile vaccine clinic to the Gervais High School parking lot on May 25th from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Anyone 12 years of age and older may receive the vaccine.
Finally, the district will also be hosting a summer school opportunity for all grade levels during the month of July. More information will be coming from your student’s school. It is our hope that many students will want to participate in face-to-face instruction five days per week during this four-week program.
This has been a difficult year for many. It is our hope that while we understand ODE and OHA may still have health and safety protocols in place such as wearing face masks and social distancing, that the 2021-22 school year will see a “return to normal” including the ability for the district to make decisions on what works best for our community.

En el otoño, el distrito distribuirá nuevos Chromebooks a todos los estudiantes. El distrito está trabajando con la Clínica de Salud de Salem para traer una clínica móvil de vacunas al estacionamiento de la Escuela Preparatoria Gervais el 25 de mayo a partir de las 4 p.m. a las 8 p.m. Cualquier persona de 12 años o más puede recibir la vacuna.
Finalmente, el distrito también ofrecerá una oportunidad de escuela de verano para todos los niveles de grado durante el mes de julio. Más información vendrá de la escuela de su estudiante.
