Dear Parents and Community Members,
While there is much joy in having students and staff return to full in-person learning, three weeks into the 2021-22 school year finds all of us continuing to face many significant challenges as we try to return to some sense of “normal” during these abnormal times. I hope your students are connecting to their peers and teachers and that you, as parents, see your children being cared for during the school day.
As we move forward, there are several topics I believe are important to share with you.
Vaccination Mandates:
First, most of you are aware of the vaccination mandate adopted by the Oregon Health Authority which requires teachers, school staff and volunteers to be fully vaccinated or have a religious or medical exception on file by October 18, 2021. At the end of this letter, I have included links to documents explaining these rules as well as an FAQ developed by the Oregon Health Authority. The district is ready to meet this mandate with plans in place for all our employees and I’m happy to say we will remain fully staffed.
This mandate may create some issues for those parents who wish to volunteer in the school or classroom but are not vaccinated. I would encourage you to contact your building principal to explore ways you may still be involved should you not be vaccinated. This mandate does not prevent you from stopping by the school to drop off an item for your student, pick your student up from school or attend something such as parent/teacher conferences. Please read the FAQs for more information.
Nutrition Services:
The district’s food services department continues to work hard to provide meals and snacks that meet the requirements set by the national program and are appealing to our students including increasing the variety of options available. If you look at the district’s website and view the menus, you will notice that more vegan options are available. Additionally, Melinda Fitz-Henry, program director, is working with students to “taste test” food the district is considering placing on the menu. We are excited about getting student input in this program.
It is also important for me to share with you that this district, along with most districts statewide, are experiencing significant issues in the supply chain. Not only are we experiencing delays in food delivery but we are not getting the food we ordered and at times, the supplier is simply cancelling the order. In a meeting with other districts in our region, many are facing issues of not having any food to serve students. We have brought this issue to the attention of the Oregon Department of Education and they are going to work with emergency management to see if there is a solution they can offer.
Transportation:
The district is fortunate to have an outstanding relationship with Mid-Columbia, our transportation provider, and a crew of very dedicated drivers who really support the community. State and nationwide there is a shortage of drivers. While this district has been fortunate to avoid that situation up until now, it became clear toward the end of August that Gervais would have to make adjustments to school start and end times to account for our own shortage. To compound issues, at some point during Labor Day Weekend, someone broke into the bus barn and disabled five busses by stealing the catalytic converters. Fortunately, we were able to borrow busses from neighboring districts. However, during an already difficult time, this action was definitely a blow to morale. The district and Mid-Co are working with local law enforcement, including notifying businesses that specialize in metal recycling, in an effort to find the individual(s) responsible for these crimes. We are so appreciative of the supportive and caring drivers we do have in the district and their tireless efforts to make the impossible possible.
Masking and Athletic Events:
The district is celebrating the fact that our student-athletes are able to get back into competition and spectators are able to attend in-person to support the teams. An important improvement this year over last year includes athletes being allowed to remove their masks while competing. We are all thankful for this change! That said, there have been a few instances in the last two weeks where spectators have refused to wear their masks while watching indoor competitions or have become argumentative when asked to comply with the Governor’s order. Additionally, when district staff is working with these individuals, other spectators are voicing their opinions about the situation in a manner that can and has escalated the situation. This is not helpful. We are asking you to please not add to an already tenuous situation. Please wear your mask and enjoy the competition and let the staff on hand solve problems as they arise. Should you see something which needs to be addressed, please do not hesitate to bring it to the attention of a staff member.
Some districts Gervais competes against may have different rules or expectations for spectators. When Gervais fans attend an away competition, please follow the directions given to you by their staff even if it is different from what we expect at home games here in Gervais. Each district has the ability to determine their own procedures and we need to respect those procedures even if we do not agree with them. Gervais spectators are known for their good sportsmanship and positive interactions with other teams and their fans. Thank you for your understanding and continued cooperation.

Mientras hay mucha alegría en que los estudiantes y el personal regresen al aprendizaje completo en persona, tres semanas después del año escolar 2021-22 todos seguimos enfrentándonos a muchos desafíos importantes a medida que intentamos regresar a un sentido de “normalidad” durante estos tiempos anormales. Espero que sus estudiantes se estén conectando con sus compañeros y maestros y que ustedes, como padres, vean cómo se cuida de sus hijos durante el día escolar.
A medida que avanzamos, hay varios temas que creo que es importante compartir con ustedes.
Mandatos de Vacunación:

Servicios de Nutrición:

En una reunión con otros distritos de nuestra región, muchos enfrentan problemas de no tener comida para servir a los estudiantes. Hemos traído este problema a la atención del Departamento de Educación de Oregon y ellos van a trabajar con la administración de emergencias para ver si hay una solución que puedan ofrecer.
Transporte:
El distrito tiene la suerte de tener una excelente relación con Mid-Columbia, nuestro proveedor de transporte, y un grupo de conductores muy dedicados que realmente apoyan a la comunidad. A nivel estatal y nacional hay escasez de conductores. Mientras que el este distrito ha tenido la suerte de evitar esa situación hasta ahora, nos quedó claro a los fines de agosto que Gervais tendría que hacer ajustes en los horarios de inicio y finalización de la escuela para dar cuenta de nuestra propia escasez. Para agravar los problemas, en algún momento durante el fin de semana del Día del Trabajo, alguien traspaso en el establo de autobuses e inutilizó cinco autobuses al robar los convertidores catalíticos. Afortunadamente, pudimos pedir prestados autobuses de los distritos vecinos. Sin embargo, durante un momento ya difícil, esta acción fue definitivamente un golpe para la moral. El distrito y Mid-Co están trabajando con la policía local, lo que incluye notificar a las empresas que se especializan en el reciclaje de metales, en un esfuerzo por encontrar a los individuos responsables de estos delitos. Estamos muy agradecidos por el apoyo y el cuidado de los conductores que tenemos en el distrito y sus incansables esfuerzos para hacer posible lo imposible.
Eventos deportivos y de enmascaramiento:
El distrito está celebrando el hecho de que nuestros estudiantes-atletas pueden volver a la competencia y los espectadores pueden asistir en persona para apoyar a los equipos. Una mejora importante este año con respecto al año pasado incluye a los atletas que se les permite quitarse las cubre bocas mientras compiten. ¡Todos estamos agradecidos por este cambio! Dicho esto, ha habido algunos casos en las últimas dos semanas en los que los espectadores se negaron a usar sus cubre bocas mientras veían competencias bajo techo o se volvieron discutidores cuando se les pidió que cumplieran con la orden del gobernador. Además, cuando el personal del distrito está trabajando con estas personas, otros espectadores están expresando sus opiniones sobre la situación de una manera que puede y ha agravado la situación. Esto no es de ayuda. Les pedimos que por favor no se sumen a una situación que ya es frágil. Use su cubre bocas y disfrute de la competencia y deje que el personal resuelva los problemas a medida que surjan. Si ve algo que debe abordarse, no dude en comunicárselo a un miembro del personal.
Algunos distritos contra los que compite Gervais pueden tener diferentes reglas o expectativas para los espectadores. Cuando los fanáticos de Gervais asistan a una competencia fuera de casa, por favor siga las instrucciones dadas por su personal, incluso si es diferente de lo que esperamos en los juegos de casa aquí en Gervais. Cada distrito tiene la capacidad de determinar sus propios procedimientos y debemos respetar esos procedimientos incluso si no estamos de acuerdo con ellos. Los espectadores de Gervais son conocidos por su buen espíritu deportivo e interacciones positivas con otros equipos y sus fanáticos. Gracias por su comprensión y cooperación continúa.
