Dear Parents and Community Members,
This morning, we had a disturbing event occur in our community. A parent with a student in one of our schools received a phone call that was identified as coming from the Gervais School District. The call did not come from any of our landlines and we have researched the phone number and have found no evidence that it is connected to anyone in the district.
When the parent answered the phone, a man said he had this parent’s child in his van and that this child had seen something that they should not have seen. He then put someone on the phone who sounded like a child and claimed it was the parent’s child. The parents remained on this call while they confirmed that their child was in school and accounted for and then the hung up on the prank call.
The district reported this to the Gervais Police Department who said they were aware that calls such as this had been going out. We believe this to possibly be an example of an Artificial Intelligence (AI) generated scam or phishing call.
At no time was any student ever in danger.

Esta mañana, ocurrió un evento inquietante en nuestra comunidad. Un padre con un estudiante en una de nuestras escuelas recibió una llamada telefónica que se identificó como proveniente del Distrito Escolar de Gervais. La llamada no provino de ninguno de nuestros teléfonos fijos y hemos investigado el número de teléfono y no hemos encontrado evidencia de que esté conectado a alguien en el distrito.
Cuando el padre contestó el teléfono, un hombre dijo que tenÃa al hijo de este padre en su camioneta y que este niño habÃa visto algo que no deberÃa haber visto. Luego puso a alguien al teléfono que sonaba como un niño y afirmó que era el hijo del padre. Los padres permanecieron en esta llamada mientras confirmaban que su hijo estaba en la escuela y que se encontraban bien y luego colgaron la llamada de broma.
El distrito informó esto al Departamento de PolicÃa de Gervais, quienes dijeron que estaban al tanto de que se habÃan realizado llamadas como esta. Creemos que esto posiblemente sea un ejemplo de una estafa generada por Inteligencia Artificial (IA) o una llamada de phishing.
En ningún momento ningún estudiante estuvo en peligro.
