GMS LEGO Robotics is an afterschool club that meets every week in Room 4 at GMS. The club advisors are Mr. Hill and Ms. Ayala.
We learn and practice skills for coding, engineering, and the First LEGO League “Core Values”: Discovery, Innovation, Impact, Inclusion, Teamwork and Fun.
On December 14th 2019, Gervais Middle School sent two teams to the LEGO Robotics qualifying tournament at Mentor Graphics in Wilsonville. This was our third consecutive year competing in this event. This year we had several returning team members as well as several new members.
Wolverines team 1 was: Jay Cha, Ben Juarez, Felix Mendoza, Alexandra Rodriguez, Bella Herrera, Alex Toran, Nicholas Patton.
Wolverines team 2 was: Logan Joy-Koer, Drew Haynes, Brandon Villegas, Nilla Shadrin, Harper Frost.
Our GMS teams presented original projects to a panel of judges, competed in a teamwork challenge, had their robot designs and program code judged, and competed in the robot challenge against other teams from around the area.
We learned a lot as the day went on, scoring more points in later rounds than in the morning. Team 2’s original project received special praise from the judges for being “well thought out, important and implementable”. The project was a proposal to create a Gervais Historical Museum here in town. Team 1’s project about the environment was compared by the judges to the climate activism of Greta Thunberg. The project was a proposal for a worldwide “cut a tree, plant a tree” movement.
Both teams had a long, fun and sometimes stressful day, and we all learned a lot that we can put to use in the coming years.
