Administration

From the Desk of the Principal

Gervais High School is a special place with a caring, well-trained staff and a student body that receives praise throughout the valley. Our community is rich in tradition, generous in its support of education and sincere in its concern for students’ educational welfare.

With an enrollment of about 320 students, we are a small school and are proud of it. Students thrive under the tutelage of enthusiastic staff members with an average class size of 22. It is easy to be noticed and known in our hallways. The staff of Gervais High School provide a safe, nurturing and enriching environment in which all students have the opportunity to develop physically, emotionally and intellectually. We welcome all languages and cultures into our melting pot.

There are four standards we ask all students to seek. First, we encourage all students to “Be themselves”. Students… you are special, one of a kind, unique. The world will never again see someone with your gifts, your skills, your experiences. Be the best version of yourself you can be, and share that with us.

Second, we encourage all students to “Find their niche”. Your niche is a special place that you belong to, it ‘fits’ you. This could be a group of friends or an activity, like a sport or club, that you participate in. What do you enjoy doing? What do you want to do? High school is a great time to have adventures, to try new elective courses, to find where you belong. So go exploring! Take an Art class, take an Ag class, join the Music club after school, try-out for the basketball team. Be yourself and believe in yourself. Try new things. Introduce yourself to new people. Be courageous!

We encourage all staff and students to work doubly hard to make sure that “No one eats alone”. Be the person that steps across the cafeteria or hallway to invite someone to have lunch with you! Break the cycle of sarcasm and criticism, break through to those who are hiding in their phone, and be a friend to someone who needs one.

Finally, we ask all students to “Post positive.” Social media has a profoundly strong influence on all of us. Much of it is fine, but much is not. When referring to yourself or someone else in your postings, please “post positive”.

Our commitment to you as a new or returning member of Gervais High School is to provide you with an education that is relevant, engaging, rigorous, and prepares you for college, a trade school or employment. Each and every year, as a result of our college dual enrollment programs, GHS students earned dozens of college credits and saved tens of thousands of dollars in college tuition costs.

We are currently supporting four Career and Technical Education (CTE) strands –

  • Agriculture, Food and Natural Resource Systems
  • Construction Technology
  • Health Occupations
  • Graphic Arts and Design Get involved. Ask questions. Educate yourself. Be known.

We welcome you. Email Mr. Stott or call at 503-792-3803 x3010

PS – During this COVID-19 time away from school it is even more important for you to start strong, to advocate for your own education. Ask questions of your teachers. Let nothing stand in the way of your education. And if you do face barriers like a lack of food or shelter, poor internet, or a lack of a dependable electronic device, please let a teacher know, Mrs. Broadurst, Mr. Aman or myself. We’re rooting for you.

From the Desk of the Assistant Principal

Before working as Assistant Principal of Gervais High School, I spent 11 years as a teacher at Gervais Middle School, teaching primarily 7th grade Language Arts.  It is exciting working in a capacity in the Gervais School District that allows me to provide greater opportunities for the students of Gervais.

My wife, Fenya Aman, works at Gervais Middle School.  We enjoy spending time at our home in Newberg with our daughter Avery, son Benjamin, and two rambunctious dogs.  When we aren’t working with the students of Gervais we enjoy camping, traveling, watching movies, going to the park, and rooting on the Ducks, Seahawks and Blazers.

I grew up in Beaverton, Oregon and graduated from Southridge High School in 2002.  I then attended the University of Oregon and graduated in 2006 with a Major in Philosophy and Minor in English.  Later, I attended Lewis & Clark College to earn my Masters in Teaching in 2008. It was then I began working in Gervais.  11 years later I obtained my Administrative License from George Fox University and began my career in administration.

The community of Gervais is very special to me, as this place has given me so much.  We have amazing students, all of whom have the potential to be successful adults. It is one of my personal responsibilities to help them navigate their young lives so they can reach their goals.  I aspire to engage with students in order to learn about them individually – every individual is different, so every student learns differently.

I strongly believe in having an “open door” policy, so feel free to stop by, have some candy, and talk.  I welcome any and all conversation…thank you.
