On Wednesday November 18 Gervais High School partnered with Willamette Promise and several industry leaders for Build Oregon: Gervais Trades Day. Despite heavy rains the day before, we had sunshine for the 20 representatives from companies such as Wilco, Pape’ Machinery, Peterson Cat, Le Cordon Bleu, Knife River, and NW College of Construction. Students were able to talk with tradespeople about their careers and what it takes to enter each field. Some were also able to participate in hands on activities such as practicing driving an excavator on a simulator indoors, and then working the real thing outdoors! Students were also surprised to learn about the use of computers and technology in such unexpected places as the cab of a Wilco sprayer, a drone, and a grader from SiTech. We were also pleased to host some neighboring schools for the afternoon session. Kennedy, Gaston, McNary, North Marion, and St. Paul students visited and learned about the many trades represented.
