Dear Parents and Community Members—
The district was informed last night at 10:30 that all Oregon schools would be closed from Monday, March 16 through Tuesday, March 31st. We are told by the Governor students will report back to school beginning April 1. Information coming to us from the Oregon Health Authority and other health officials indicates the number of confirmed COVID-19 coronavirus cases in the Willamette Valley will continue to grow. While the Gervais School District has not had any presumptive cases (people suspected of having the virus and waiting for test results), we understand it’s important for us not only as an individual school district but as a part of a larger community, to do our part in helping to prevent as much exposure as possible for students, employees and the community. By extending Spring Break throughout the entire state, we hope to reduce exposure and infection rates.
During this closure period, all school-based sports and extra-curricular activities are cancelled. We have also cancelled all outside group reservations including those sponsored by the Gervais Sports League or other groups who normally use our facilities.
Preschool and Daycare are closed during this time period as well.
We are currently working on a plan to address ways in which we could provide meals to students during the break. I hope to have more information to you by the end of the day on Friday or at some point over the weekend.
Staff is expected to return to work on Monday, March 30. We understand the state will assess and either confirm or adjust any return dates by Wednesday, March 25.
Communication coming to districts from the Governor’s office and the Oregon Department of Education is occurring hourly. Over the next several days and weeks, many questions will need to be answered including things such as making up days, state testing, seniors and graduation, etc. At this time, we have no further information and anything you are hearing other than that is speculation. It will be vitally important that we all continue to remain grounded in facts and depend on the official statements made by your school district and our local and state agencies.
Remember that we have created a special tab (“Updates on COVID-19”) on the district’s webpage which will provide you with all updated information as it is received. Yesterday we did add information to this tab that includes how to talk to your child about what is going on and what you can do and say to help with alleviating any fears and anxiety they may be experiencing.

Anoche a las 10:30 el distrito fue informado que todas las escuelas estarían cerradas desde el lunes 16 de marzo hasta el martes 31 de marzo. La Gobernadora ordeno que todos los estudiantes no se reportaran a la escuela hasta el 1 de abril. La información que nos llega de la Autoridad de Salud de Oregon y otros funcionarios de salud indican que el número de casos confirmados de coronavirus COVID-19 en el Valle de Willamette seguirá creciendo. El Distrito Escolar de Gervais no ha tenido ningún caso presuntivo (personas que sospéchenos de tener el virus y que estén esperando los resultados de las pruebas), entendemos que es importante para nosotros no sólo como un distrito escolar individual, sino como parte de una comunidad más grande, para hacer nuestra parte en ayudar a prevenir la mayor exposición posible para los estudiantes, los empleados y la comunidad. Al extender las vacaciones de primavera en todo el estado, esperamos reducir el porcentaje de exposición e infección.
Durante este período de cierre, se cancelan todos los deportes escolares y actividades extracurriculares. También hemos cancelado todas las reservaciones de grupo externos, incluidas las patrocinadas por la Liga Deportiva de Gervais u otros grupos que normalmente utilizan nuestras instalaciones.
