Dear Parents,
On Tuesday evening at 9 p.m. I received an email from the Oregon Department of Education. At that time all districts in the state of Oregon were informed that we would be moving forward with something called “Distance Learning.” Prior to Tuesday’s email, we were given directions to put plans together to provide supplemental learning for all of our students. Supplemental learning are opportunities for students to practice concepts and skills teachers previously presented. The thought was that as long as students were “practicing” what they already knew, when students returned to school on April 29th, teachers would not have to spend as much time reviewing material before moving on to new topics.
As the COVID-19 pandemic continues to spread throughout the country and our state, government leaders are beginning to give additional guidance to school districts. At this point in time, we have been told to prepare as if students will not return to finish this school year. In anticipation of that possibility, all teachers have been told to prepare lesson plans for the remainder of this school year and make those lessons available no later than April 13, 2020. The district has been polling parents to determine if there is internet available in the home and if there are enough devices (laptops, desktop computers, Chromebooks, etc.) in the home so that each child is able to access the lessons during the day. Many students, especially our high school students, believe they will be able to use their phones to complete their school work. This will not be the case. There will be too many tasks to accomplish and using a phone will be too difficult. This week we will be announcing our plans for providing Chromebooks for students/families to check out for the duration of the closure. If you have a high school student, make sure he or she gets a Chromebook! We are also working on options for helping families get internet in their homes but this will take a bit longer to finalize.
More detailed information is coming regarding picking up devices but for now please put on your calendars:
Drive-Thru pick-up at Gervais High School for Chromebooks: Monday, April 6 from 2:00 to 4:00 PM and 6:00 to 7:30 PM. If you are unable to make it during this time, please contact your building principal and we will get you a device!
For those students and families who do not currently have internet, we will be providing packets of printed materials. At this time, we are still working on these including how to get them to your students. There will be more to come on this.
It will be very important that you and/or your student keep in contact with teachers. The Department of Education is expecting the district to provide documentation of communication and weekly contact with either the student or the parent.
Many of you may have high school students and specifically Seniors who are filled with stress and anxiety about graduation. We have been told we will be provided with graduation requirements soon. Please rest assured that high school staff will make it their priority to assist students in earning their diplomas. Mr. Stott and I have been in constant communication since this school closure began and we have several scenarios we are prepared to launch depending on the directions we receive.
I know you have many questions including “how will my student get their stuff they left at school; will there be a graduation; what about Prom; I have a kindergartener—will there be kindergarten roundup” and more! As we begin to work through these new directions we just received, we will begin problem solving answers to a variety of questions. I ask for your continued patience and your building principals will be sending out communications in the coming days.
Finally, I want to recognize that this is an incredibly stressful time for you as parents (on many levels) and for your children. Continuing some form of school during these last eight weeks of school will be important but it is also not meant to create conflict between you and your student. Please do not hesitate to reach out to any school employee if you need support or if your student is struggling either academically or emotionally. I read an article yesterday where the author pointed out “This is not homeschooling. This is crisis schooling” which is very true. You and your students are being placed in a difficult position. I would encourage all of us to remember that this is a temporary situation and that while very difficult, keeping our focus on each other and our loved ones is the primary concern.
On a side note I wanted to give a ‘shout out’ to our fabulous food service staff, delivery people and bus drivers! In the 12 school days we have been “closed” we have delivered 19,492 meals (this includes breakfast and lunch).

En ese momento, todos los distritos del estado de Oregón fueron informados de que seguiríamos adelante con algo llamado “Aprendizaje a Distancia”. Antes del correo electrónico del martes, se nos dieron instrucciones para hacer planes para proporcionar aprendizaje suplementario para todos nuestros estudiantes. Animo a todos a recordar que esta es una situación temporal y que mientras sea muy difícil, mantener nuestro enfoque en los demás y en nuestros seres queridos es la principal preocupación.
En una nota lateral quería agradecer a nuestro fabuloso personal de servicio de comida, repartidores y conductores de autobuses! En los 12 días escolares que hemos estado “cerrados” hemos entregado 19,492 comidas (esto incluye desayuno y almuerzo).
