Back to School Letter from Supt. Stevens

Dear Parents,

As we enter August and are preparing for the beginning of our school year, the district continues to receive guidance and updates from both the Oregon Health Authority and the Governor’s office regarding reopening schools. Last week, districts were informed that prior to any face-to-face instruction resuming in our buildings, not only did the number of infections in the entire state need to decrease but each county needed to see a decline in rates for three weeks in a row. At this time, based on those health requirements, most districts in the State of Oregon will not be allowed to reopen and this includes Gervais.

School begins for all students on September 8, 2020. Students and families will have the choice between “GSD Hybrid” or “GSD Online Only.” The district had shared what our “hybrid learning” model would look like in a previous communication. We still plan on offering this hybrid model but will start with the online version. Students will be provided with Chromebooks and access to teachers and instructional assistants every day. Students will be required to log in and participate in real time classes. For students in younger grades (K-2) we know that there will be a transitional time of moving into online learning. For those parents who feel that remaining solely online is the best choice for their students, the “GSD Online Only” option will be based on customized curriculum from a third party vendor but students will have a Gervais School District teacher assigned to the course and access to real time instruction. We are still working out the details regarding the vendor but please know that this online option will provide quality curriculum and supports for your students. For families who prefer to remain online only, we are asking you to commit to at least one semester at a time for this option. The district will be contacting those families who stated they wanted this online only option.

As the infection rates decline this fall, the district will move to face to face instruction as soon as possible. Right now, our plan is to be online only for all students from September 8 to November 2. As we approach November, based on infection rates and health metrics at that time, the district will provide more information about moving students in grades k-5 to face-to-face instruction in a building four days per week and students in grades 6-12 receiving instruction in the building two days per week.

Regardless of which learning model is selected, students will be required to engage in their learning Monday through Friday. Parents will receive very clear directions and the district will be hosting parent trainings as well as ‘virtual’ open houses and weekly information sessions so all of your questions can be answered in a timely fashion. Estimados Padres,

Al entrar en agosto y nos estamos preparando para el comienzo de nuestro año escolar, el distrito sigue recibiendo orientación y actualizaciones tanto de la Autoridad de Salud de Oregón como de la oficina del Gobernador con respecto a la reapertura de las escuelas. La semana pasada, se informó a los distritos que antes de que se reanudaran la instrucción presencial en nuestros edificios, no sólo el número de infecciones en todo el estado debía disminuir, sino que cada condado necesita ver una disminución en las tasas durante tres semanas seguidas. En este momento, basado en esos requisitos de salud, la mayoría de los distritos en el estado de Oregon no se les permitirá reabrir y esto incluye a Gervais.

La escuela comienza para todos los estudiantes el 8 de septiembre de 2020. Los estudiantes y las familias tendrán la opción de elegir entre “GSD Hybrid” o “GSD Online Only “, El distrito había compartido cómo sería nuestro modelo de “aprendizaje híbrido” en una comunicación anterior. Todavía planeamos ofrecer este modelo híbrido, pero comenzaremos con la versión en línea. Los estudiantes recibirán Chromebooks y acceso a maestros y asistentes de instrucción todos los días. Los estudiantes tienen que iniciar sesión y participar en clases en tiempo real. Todavía estamos trabajando los detalles con respecto al proveedor, pero por favor sepa que esta opción en línea proporcionará currículo de calidad y apoyo para sus estudiantes. Para las familias que prefieren permanecer en línea solamente, le pedimos que se comprometa a esta opción por lo menos un semestre. El distrito se pondrá en contacto con aquellas familias que declararon que querían esta opción en línea solamente.

A medida que los porcentajes de infección disminuyen este otoño, el distrito se moverá a cara a cara instrucción lo más pronto posible. En este momento, nuestro plan es estar sólo en línea para todos los estudiantes desde el 8 de septiembre al 2 de noviembre. A medida que nos acercamos a noviembre, basado en los porcentajes de infección y las métricas de salud en ese momento, el distrito proporcionará más información sobre como trasladar a los estudiantes en los grados k-5 a instrucción cara a cara en un edificio cuatro días a la semana y a los estudiantes en los grados 6-12 recibiendo instrucción en el edificio dos días a la semana.

Independientemente del modelo de aprendizaje seleccionado, los estudiantes deberán participar en su aprendizaje de lunes a viernes. Los padres recibirán instrucciones muy claras y el distrito organizará entrenamiento para los padres, así como casas abiertas “virtuales” y sesiones semanales de información para que todas sus preguntas puedan ser respondidas de manera oportuna.
